For me theatre and dance are the arts of human body and emotion. I get inspired and excited about other people and how they are and present themselves with their physical body. I believe that everything can be seen and shown through movement. It sometimes allows to tell something more that words are not capable of. But also sometimes it is easier to tell a long movement phrase by just one word.
When I was nine years old I got excited about theatre. I joined the local youth theatre group where I got to have theatre as a hobby for more than ten years. Through those years I got to do theatre, growing up and teething in a safe environment. My other hobbies in my teen years were dance and playing the flute. In my twenties I decided to give theatre and acting all my passion and focus. I applied and got in to Lahti folk high school where I studied for two years. Through many bends I ended up studying dance at an older age, at the age of 25. |
Outokumpu, the little North-Karelian city took my heart and I found my way back to expressing with my body, enjoyment, humour and myself. I like to tell people that
"everybody should spend two years out of their lives living in Outokumpu studying dance" since I know nothing better than that. My acting has gone deeper and further because of physical practices through dance and vice versa I've gained a lot of expression to my dancing thanks to theatre studies. In future I want to develop myself and my talents even further. That, I think, is possible by participating different workshops and festivals locally and internationally and also by working with people from different parts of art field. I also have an idea of holding workshops for young theatre and dance students. Authentic movement and improvisation are the key to explore new ways to perform and to take further the knowledge which we already have. In my spare time I still like to be active but in a different way so I do orientering and exercise seeker dog activity with my Spanish water dog Elma. Anything really that gets me out in nature and exploring new things. |
The teachers and directors I've got to work with have influenced my work a lot. For example Katariina Vähäkallio from Outokumpu college has taught me a lot about authentic movement and improv. Her soft and intelligent guidance has pushed me to trust myself as a professional performer and artist. Misa Palander is one of the most important teachers I've had in the field of theatre. She has directed me towards courage and self-confidence in acting. And also I am really glad for the collaboration I've been lucky to have with the Finnish choreographer Ari Numminen.
